Insuring your HGV, where should you go?

Whether you own one lorry or a fleet of a hundred, having insurance in place isn’t an option. If you operate on Britain’s roads then you must have cover in place to protect other road users and their vehicles.

The trouble is, the costs of doing business are increasing all the time – staff costs, the price of fuel, electricity back at your office. It’s tempting to try and save some money on your insurance – after all, you haven’t had an accident for years.

The trouble is, accidents can happen at any time – and if you’re not properly protected, the impact on your business can be devastating. If you operate a lorry – or lorries – then the only time they’re earning for you is when they’re on the road.

But who do you go to for your HGV insurance? You want the best policy to protect your vehicle and your business, but time’s money. You don’t have time to shop around.

The answer is to go to an independent insurance broker who specialises in HGV insurance – who’s dealt with it for years and who has a specialist HGV team: a company like Staveley Head. Staveley Head Goods Vehicle Insurance offers fantastic and reliable cover.

Why? Because number one, they’re experienced. Whatever question you have about your HGV insurance policy, they’ve heard it before and they’ll know the answer. And they’ll take the time to understand you and your business – because they already deal with thousands of HGV clients, they’ll know how important it is that you stay on the road. And of course, they’ll know exactly what you need to have in place to comply with the law.

As Staveley Head are independent brokers, they deal with all the insurance companies. That’s important – not only can they shop around to find you the most competitive quote, they’ll also be able to advise you on how the insurance companies will deal with any claim you make. They’ll recommend a company who’ll deal with it quickly and efficiently. There’s no point saving a few pence on your premium with Company X if their response to your claim is “I’m sorry, all of our operators are busy.”

Running an HGV business is tough at the best of times. But with Staveley Head in your corner you can stop worrying about the insurance on your vehicle. They’ll find you exactly the right policy – one that keeps your vehicle, and your business, safely on the road ahead.

Big Rig Trucker Episode 2 : Accidents And Ambitions

First I would like to thank you for watching this video “Big Rig Trucker episode :2″ it means a lot to me. The video was captured about two months ago, I should have produced this earlier but got sick and lost my drive. I will work hard to produce this on a much more regular basis. This episode captures one h3ll of a trip that Sean Sutherland and I had across I 90/ I 94. It was really trying for the both of us, Sean had a sever ear infection that started to bleed, I was at the time getting over a cold myself. During the trip I had multiple tire failures and breakdowns, coupled with the many near accidents we where able to avoid lets just say we where happy to see the trip completed at the end. However, I learned a lot along the way, even with the bad I would do it all over again!! Some of you might have noticed I have been gone for a while now. I have been studying film production, spending most of my day studying actually and happy to do it, I am very excited about the art of visual story telling. Adobe cs3 has a lot of tools and I have a lot to learn, I promise you this tho my videos are going to get a lot better over the next year or so. I want to thank all of you for being here with me and caring even if the videos where not that great. It has never really been a “dream” of mine to make a documentary about trucking(silly huh, as I do it in these videos). I personally think that the films about the trucking industry are complete bullshit. Seeing as I am a DRIVER with

Accidents Involving Heavy Duty Dump Trucks and Passenger Vehicles Can be Avoided

Even with a limited number of things to move, your car can be too small and it will take many trips to get all things to another place. Launching American Truck Buyer has been somewhat of an adventure, and although we have not covered even one percent of our grounds yet, things are moving rapidly. We have established ourselves on the Internet and are quickly becoming known in the business. Working advertising for trucks and trailers in the entire 50 states as our main source of revenue our company is doing well. Our entire sales team is excited and everyone is fighting for the top position as salesmen of the month. As we get out there more and more the name American Truck Buyer will grow synonymously with the word trucking.

There are a few common problems that many Truckers come across with the motorists.

1. Peek-a-boo! – Now you see them, now you don’t. This peek-a-boo game is very troublesome to truckers. Large trucks have several blind spots which make it hard for the drivers to see other motorists who like to hang out there. The best thing that you can do is either pass the truck or stay a comfortable distance behind them. When in doubt, check for the trucker’s side view mirrors. If you can see them, then chances are that they might be able to see you too.

2. Brake this habit – Many of us at one point or another gets stuck behind a large truck. So the most logical step would be to change the lanes to pass the truck away. No problems with that … the problem lies in a vehicle cutting back into the truck’s lane right in front of them, then braking for a turn or just slowing down, period. What most motorists don’t take into account is that truckers need a lot of space in order to slow down, at least two to three times the amount of passenger vehicles.

3. Teaching a lesson – Some drivers of passenger vehicles like to try and “teach” truckers a good lesson. Several times drivers think that the big Trucks and Trailers are either going too rapidly or slow. So they’ll speed up to pass the trucker and then get back in the trucker’s lane and slow down. Many parents tell their kids, “Worry about yourself,” and it would be smart for other motorists to heed that advice. Leave it to the troopers and policemen to enforce the laws of the road.

4. Back up and try again – In this day and age of technology, people are more accustomed to instant results and hate waiting for anything. Unfortunately, when big trucks have to back into a space, it may take a few tries to succeed. Motorists should appreciate the fact that these trucks are bigger than they are and let the truckers do their job. Patience can be a virtue!

By exercising a little of that common sense, many accidents involving Heavy Duty Trucks and Passenger vehicles could be avoided. That old adage, “It is better to be Safe than Sorry,” certainly applies here!

Buying And Owning A Custom Truck

Owning a custom truck can be a full time hobby. Together with the usual maintenance and servicing needed to on any vehicle you will find your time taken up by many hours of cleaning and hunting down the latest truck part and accessory.

Many long distance truck drivers drive a custom truck as it is often used to give an indication of their persona and to let people know what type of things they are into together with showing the world how cool their truck is.

Most custom truck enthusiast will have designer spray art on their cabs, bonnets or in some cases the entire vehicle. It is rare than anyone looking to own a custom truck will buy a pre sprayed and decaled truck as this simply wont reflect their own individual style.

It is far better to buy a regular truck and then customise it exactly as you want it and in your own time. When buying a truck just like any other vehicle you should ensure that all the paperwork is in order and ask to see the vehicle history to determine our well the truck has been serviced and maintained.

Also ensure the vehicle has not been involved in any accidents by carrying out the relevant checks as the last think you will want after spending many hours of devoted work creating a fantastic truck is too find out it should not be legally allowed to be on the road.

If you are not mechanically minded then it is essential you bring a good mechanic with you or better still pay for a qualified mechanic to give the truck a full check of both the body work and the engine.

Maintaining and running a custom truck will be very hard on your budget as there are constantly new things you will want to buy for it and specialist parts and truck accessories do not come cheap.

As many truck drivers are driving through the night and spending many hours inside their cabs it is not just the body work and engine they have to think about.

Making a home from home in the cab is just as important. There are many things to consider when designing the perfect custom truck interior. One of the first things you will need is curtains so when you are sleeping you will not be woken up when the sun rises.

With the internet available in most places a laptop is great for keeping on top of emails and communicating with friends and family whilst you are on the road.

A television and radio are also essentials. These are all expensive items but a good custom truck should not be without them. You can also consider designer truck seats with your own personal logo stitched into them.

Modifying a custom truck is endless but can be a great and rewarding hobby.

Protect yourself From Deadly Truck Accidents

Every year in Florida, nearly 400 people are killed in accidents with large trucks and nearly 6000 are injured, many seriously. Of course, the word “accident” is deceptive. Accident implies that no one is at fault, but in truth there are very few true accidents. Most of the time, someone is responsible for causing the circumstances that led to the crash, and too often auto drivers are just as responsible for the wreck as the trucker. But if you want to avoid becoming part of these unfortunate statistics, there are a number of things you can do.

Respect Space

Successful driving is mostly a matter of negotiating the space around your vehicle and others on the road. Be aware that semis and other large trucks need more space than other vehicles. Most importantly, respect the space in front of a large truck. Large trucks need more distance for braking than other vehicles, as much as half again the distance. At 55 mph, a car on a dry road with good brakes can stop in about 200 feet, while a large truck requires about 300 feet. That means that if you have to slam on your brakes to stop, and you are less than 100 feet in front of a large truck, that truck may hit you. On wet days, a large truck may require as much as half a mile to come to a full stop at highway speeds, as much as 1000 feet more than a car.

Do not forget that large trucks also require a significant amount of space when turning. Give them a wide berth if you are turning at the same time, and, most importantly, anticipate and respect the need for a wide right turn.

Be Observant

You can do a lot to avoid a deadly crash with an 18-wheeler if you simply pay attention to traffic. If you can anticipate traffic hazards before coming to them, you can greatly reduce the chances that you will be involved in an accident. If you have to brake suddenly, the semi truck behind you might also have to brake suddenly, but if you can anticipate possible hazards, you can deal with them more gradually, allowing you and the semi truck behind you to adjust to the conditions.

Be observant of semi trucks and anticipate their movements, because they may not be able to respond to you. This applies not only on the highway, but on city streets as well. Be aware of the entire length of the truck. Ideally, the truck should have lights and reflectors along its entire length, but in many cases, they become dirt obscured or damaged, making them hard to see at night. Hitting the side of a truck trailer can lead to one of the most deadly forms of truck accidents, the underride, in which the chassis of your car passes under the chassis of the truck, causing the entire force of the impact to be borne by the car’s windshield and upper pillars, which are unprepared to handle such force.

Be Visible

18-wheelers and other large trucks have significant blind spots. If they cannot see you, they are more likely to hit you. Always make sure that you are in a place where you are highly visible to the truck driver. Do not linger in blind spots behind or to the side of large trucks. In addition, be sure to use your lights whenever the conditions are other than full bright daylight, including fog, rain, snow, and twilight.

Yield

Many accidents can be attributed to overly aggressive driving. In many cases, you can avoid an accident by simply making space for a merging vehicle and not trying to pass too closely to other vehicles. Courtesy will go a long way toward making the road safer for everyone.

The Hinge of Fate

However, sometimes no matter what you do, you are involved in a crash with a heavy truck. This can be a true accident in rare cases, but more often it is the result of someone else not doing his or her part to keep the road safe. Many times, this person is related to the trucking company, whether it is the driver who should have been paying more attention, the maintenance crew that should have maintained the truck’s brakes, or the loader that should have been more careful securing the cargo.

Big Rig, Semi, Tractor-trailer and 18 Wheeler Truck Accidents – California Truck Accident Lawyer?s Suggestions to Prevent Future Truck Accidents

If you’ve had a truck accident anywhere in California from Oxnard to Palmdale, Apple Valley to Camarillo, from Corona in Orange County, CA to Fontana, from Victorville to Twentynine Palms or even in Hesperia, Moreno Valley, San Diego, Oceanside, Ontario, Perris, Redlands, or Palm Springs, you’ve probably been wondering if the California state legislators are working on any new ways to try to prevent truck accidents.

I had heard that the state’s legislators were rushing to pass some new laws to prevent truck accidents so I called one of my state Senators to get a sneak peak at just how the proposed legislation would affect big rig truck drivers in California and personal injury victims.

“So you’re outlawing texting by truck drivers?” I asked.

“Who told you that?” the Senator asked. “We’re outlawing jacknifing”

“Huh?” I asked. “Jacknifed trucks aren’t jacknifed intentionally.”

“Then why do they happen so often?” the Senator asked. “From now on, if you jacknife your truck, you do the time.”

“Oh good grief,” I said. “What else are you considering to prevent big rig accidents?”

“Blind spots,” the Senator said proudly.

“This is ridiculous,” I said. “That comes with the territory of driving a big rig truck. You might as well outlaw trucks from carrying any loads.”

The Senator made a note of that despite my frown.

“Have you considered the fact that in as much as 75 percent of the car versus big rig truck accidents, the driver of the car is at fault?”

“Of course we know that,” the Senator said. “Seventy-five percent?”

I nodded.

“Something’s got to be done about those car drivers,” the Senator said.

“You Senators still have a good idea to want to improve truck safety,” I said. “You’re just going about it the wrong way.”

“What do you suggest?” the Senator asked.

“Focus on ensuring that big rigs have properly functioning brake systems,” I said and watched the Senator taking furious notes.

“That’s good. That’s really good. Anything else?” the Senator asked.

“Spot check the trucks for proper loading and not just weigh them,” I said

“Excellent, excellent,” the Senator said. “Anything else?”

“How about penalizing companies that skirt the rules on resting truck drivers so they don’t fall asleep on the roads,” I suggested.

“That can be done, sure,” the Senator said.

“But you’re going to have to ensure that the logs of truck drivers aren’t fudged when it comes to recording the hours a truck driver spends behind the wheel,” I said.

“We’ll put our best minds on it,” the Senator said.

I shuddered to think what that might produce.

“Anything else?” the Senator asked.

“How about spot checking the truck drivers for alcohol or drugs?” I asked. “You do it for car drivers on weekends and holidays. Why not for truck drivers?”

“Good question,” the Senator said. “Do you have any other suggestions?”

“I do,” I said. “Why don’t you have the Highway Patrol focus their attention more on trucks that exceed the speed limit than on car drivers.. Can you imagine how much more dangerous a big-rig truck is driving at a dangerous speed with a full load is than a little car?”

“It’s harder to catch those truck drivers,” the Senator said. “Don’t they still have CB radios and use code language like in the Dukes of Hazard?”

I shook my head and left as the Senator was rushing back to tell his colleagues what great new ideas he had come up with to prevent truck accidents.

News Note – On October 1, 2008, Governor Schwarzenegger banned motorists from texting, writing or reading messages on electronic devices. The law goes into effect January 1, 2009.
